In short: A useful Amazon competitor analysis answers seven questions in a fixed order โ€” from "who sells here?" to "what do I do first?". Start in the middle and you optimise symptoms. Every step below is backed by a real figure from an analysis.

For most sellers, "competitor analysis" on Amazon means opening the category top 10 and looking at what they do differently. That isn't wrong, but it almost always ends the same way โ€” you copy surfaces and miss the structure underneath.

Order matters. Start with the listing and you are optimising copy for a category whose price and seller structure you don't yet know.

The seven questions, in this order

1Who is actually selling here?Capture Buy Box sellers and classify them via their imprint. In the example: 30 established, 8 EU, 9 Chinese-origin sellers, 3 unclear โ€” out of 50 classified. To the origin check →
2Where does my price sit in the field?48 priced products between โ‚ฌ35 and โ‚ฌ240; the analysed listing was the second cheapest โ€” and still ranked 12th.To price monitoring →
3Which terms sell here?1,692 unique words across 54 listings, TF-IDF weighted. Four terms with 43โ€“63 % coverage were missing from the listing. To keyword research →
4Which fields are empty?Every data field against the full pool: 29 of 42 spec fields were filled โ€” the 13 empty ones cost visibility in filtered searches. To the listing mistakes →
5What do buyers talk about?Aspect sentiment from the reviews: build quality 239 mentions, handling 128, family-friendliness 114. The advertised feature barely appeared. To the listing mistakes →
6How is the range structured?187 variants in 45 families, largest family 9 variants. Ours stopped exactly where the market volume began. To variants →
7What do I do first?Three prioritised actions drawn from everything above โ€” with evidence and confidence, not gut feeling. To the sample report →

Why the order matters

The first two steps establish the playing field: who are you up against, and where do you sit on price? Only then is it worth looking at the listing โ€” because the same weak copy means something entirely different in a brand-led category than in one occupied by interchangeable direct importers.

A practical example: the analysed product was the second cheapest of 48. Without that context the obvious action would have been "lower the price". With it, the bottleneck was clearly visibility โ€” 13 empty spec fields and four missing search terms.

How often to repeat it

  • Full analysis: quarterly, and always before a range or pricing decision.
  • Price and Buy Box: continuously โ€” that is monitoring, not analysis.
  • Event-driven: when a new competitor appears, your BSR drops without obvious cause, or you add a variant.

How to spot a weak analysis

  • It consists of estimates. Estimated monthly revenue sounds concrete but is neither verifiable nor instructive.
  • It names no limits. Every data collection has blind spots. Naming none means nobody looked.
  • It ends in numbers instead of tasks. The end state has to be what you change on Monday โ€” with evidence for why exactly that.

The difference between proven and estimated data is explored in Scoutvo vs. traditional market-data tools. What a finished report looks like is shown in the sample report with all seven chapters.

Frequently asked questions

How do I run an Amazon competitor analysis?

In seven steps and in this order: sellers and their origin, price position in the field, category keywords, completeness of your data fields, purchase criteria from reviews, variant structure, and the prioritised actions derived from all of it.

How many competitors should I analyse?

As many as your category board holds โ€” in the analysed example that was 53 competitors. A top-10 view regularly misses the sellers creating the price pressure.

How often should a competitor analysis be repeated?

In full quarterly, plus before any range or pricing decision. Price and Buy Box belong in continuous monitoring instead.

What does an Amazon competitor analysis cost?

With Scoutvo a full analysis is one report credit; plans start at $19 a month with ten analyses. We prepare the first analysis of your category free of charge on request.
